An elbow is a pipe fitting which is used as a connection point between two lengths of pipes to produce a change in the direction of flow in the pipe, usually at an angle of 90°, 45° or 180°. Elbows are also commonly referred as bends, and are available in a range of materials such as stainless steel, carbon steel, alloy steel, nickel alloys, duplex, and cupro nickel.

Also known as 90° bends, 90° elbows are manufactured as SR (Short Radius) elbows and LR (Long Radius) elbows. 45° elbows are typically made as LR (Long Radius) elbows.

The long radius elbows have a center to end distance that is 1.5 times the NPS in inches (R=1.5D), while the short radius is equal to the NPS in inches (R=1.0D).=Short radius elbows are generally used in tight areas, and long radius elbows are used when space is available and flow is more critical. We can also manufacture and supply carbon steel elbows and stainless steel elbows in non-standard size angles such as 60°, 100°, 120° or 150°.

The ends may be machined for butt welding, threaded (usually female), or socketed, etc. When the two ends differ in size, the fitting is called a reducing elbow or reducer elbow.

Steel Pipe Elbow Manufacturing Standards
ASTM A234:Standard Specification for Piping Fittings of Wrought Carbon Steel and Alloy Steel for Moderate and Hihg Temperature Service
ASTM A403: Standard Specification for Wrought Austenitic Stainless Steel Piping Fittings
ASME B16.9: Factory Made Wroght Steel Butt Welding Fittings
What is the elbow radius?

Elbow radius refers to the radius of curvature. If the radius is the same as the pipe diameter, it is called short radius elbow, also known as SR elbow, which is usually used for low-pressure and low-speed pipes.
If the radius is greater than the pipe diameter and R ≥ 1.5 diameter, we call it long radius elbow (LR elbow), which is used for high-pressure and high flow pipes.

Classification by bearing angle
As we all know, elbows can be divided into different angles according to the fluid direction of the pipeline, such as 45 degrees, 90 degrees and 180 degrees, which is the most common angle. For some special pipes, there are also 60 degrees and 120 degrees.

45 degree elbow
Long radius 45 degree elbow
A pipe elbow is installed between two pipes to change the direction of the fluid to 45 degrees. Compared with 90 degree elbow, 45 degree elbow produces less friction and lower pressure.

Short radius 45 degree elbow
The 45 degree SR elbow is usually connected to copper, plastic, steel, cast iron and lead. It can also be connected to stainless steel and rubber clamps. It is widely used in chemical industry, food, water supply facilities, electronic industry, chemical pipeline, horticulture, agricultural production, solar equipment pipeline, air conditioning pipeline and other fields.

90 degree steel pipe elbow
Long radius 90 degree elbow
LR 90 degree steel pipe elbow is installed between pipes of different lengths. It helps to change direction at 90 degrees and is usually used to connect hoses to pumps, deck drains and valves.

Short radius 90 degree elbow
SR 90 degree elbow is the same as the above pipe elbow, but the diameter is short. Therefore, this kind of steel elbow is usually used when there is insufficient space.
180 degree steel elbow

A 180 degree steel elbow helps to change direction at 180 degrees because it usually causes low pressure. Its application is limited to minimum deposition and low turbulence systems.
